Guide to our Curriculum
What will my children learn at ravensthorpe?
At Ravensthorpe, we want our children to...
'Be You, Work Hard, Soar High' in all aspects of school life.
In our Foundation Stage classes, children learn through the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum using a mixture of whole class lessons, small groups and access to continuous provision both inside and outside the classrooms.

To help your child to learn to read and write, we teach phonics using Read Write Inc right from the beginning alongside hearing a range of stories and non-fiction books.
Maths is taught using the NCTEM Mastering Number Programme. Shape, space and measure is taught using White Rose Maths.
Teachers in EYFS and Key Stage 1 use an online system called Seesaw to communicate with parents and share the learning that has been experienced in class. We will be introducing Seesaw in Key Stage 2 in January 2024.
We then follow the National Curriculum which sets out what children should know, understand and do in each year. Please click on each subject at the side of this page to find out more information.

Each half-term, parents will receive a curriculum leaflet - this will share what each child will be learning.
If you require any further information about the curriculum, please speak to your child's class teacher.
How do we teach children to read?
We use a range of approaches to ensure that all our children become confident and enthusiastic readers. The mechanics of reading is taught through the teaching of phonics using RWInc. The wider reading curriculum is provided through 'Talk Through Stories' in KS1 and Destination Reader in KS2. Every day children participate in the 'Daily Reading Pledge' with dedicates time for children to listen to and talk about a range of high quality texts.

How do we teach maths?
In Reception children are taught number using NCTEM Mastering Number
In Year 1 children are taught number using NCTEM Mastering Number this is supplemented by NCTEM curriculum prioritisation materials.
In Year 2 Mental Maths is delivered using NCTEM Mastering Number and White Rose.
We use White Rose Maths to to teach our maths curriculum. It aims to develop children’s conceptual understanding and skills proficiency and is underpinned by a strong commitment to problem-solving, reasoning and fluency. For more information about White Rose Maths, please click HERE.
How do we assess our children?
Our teachers use a range of assessment tools to ensure that all children make progress. We use formative assessment in class to ensure that we build on children’s knowledge and understanding. In addition, we use NFER assessments to check on how children are progressing and to identify next steps.
We also use resources from White Rose Maths and, in Key Stage 2, Destination Reader to support children’s understanding of maths and reading. We use a United Learning in-class pre- and post- unit of work assessment in other areas of the curriculum.
How will I know how my child is doing?
Each term, parents will receive a report card that includes information about their child's current attainment along with effort and attitude, attendance and behaviour, Annual Reports are then sent to parents in second half of the Summer Term.
Parents have an opportunity to meet with class teachers at our parent-teacher meetings throughout the year.
In addition, we invite all parents and carers again to termly Parent Cafe's, which provide an opportunity to see the children’s learning in action and to join in.
What about extra-curricular and enrichment activities?
We aim to ensure that our children enjoy a wide range of experiences during their time at Ravensthorpe. As well as the opportunity to exhibit work each term, we celebrate effort and positive attitude through assemblies and the end of year 'Red Carpet' Event.
We have a range of community visitors who come to support learning, including fire-fighters, health-workers, story-tellers, Panto and even a Roman Soldier! Our children in Y5 and Y6 take part in the National Young Voices Event and some visit the Houses of Parliament.
Our Just Do Sports Coaches offer a range of extra-curricular activities as well as supporting the delivery of PE within school.
